Beautiful old wooden building in Calubian town, Leyte Province. Many of the beautiful traditional wooden houses in the Philippines and around Biliran Province have sliding shutter windows that rather than glass, have Capiz shell windowpanes. The Oyster or Capiz shells have been used in windows even during the Spanish colonization of the Philippines as glass would have been too expensive for most people to use.

Do you think Old Traditional houses like this should be protected and preserved? This is a house in Almeria town. As you can see this house had beautiful Capiz Shell sliding windows and very detailed pierced wooden panels back in 2012, but in 2013 much of the woodwork was removed or painted, and the precious old windows were replaced with simple modern aluminium. Do you think these historic houses should be protected by law for future generations or do you think its ok for them to be modernised?

the 'beautiful wooden building' was the town home of my grandparents celso sta. juana muertegui and his wife, gliceria garganera delantar. it was built in the late 1930s in the 'streamline moderne' style. my father , freddie, the eldest of the five children was born here in august 8, 1941. the family commutes regularly by 'lancha' or motor launch to the family farm in wague, leyte, leyte where a similar structure was and is still used as a the family country home. this house was eventually rented to coca cola philippines and in the early 1990s, my widowed grandmother sold it for good.
